Ignatius Kaigama, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, recently addressed remarks made by Kemi Badenoch, leader of the British Conservative Party and Opposition in the UK Parliament.
As reported by Arise TV, Kaigama voiced concern that Badenoch’s critical comments about Nigeria could exacerbate divisions among the country’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
He warned that such statements might perpetuate harmful stereotypes, weakening national unity and mutual understanding.
While acknowledging that constructive criticism can inspire positive change when offered with empathy and solutions, he cautioned that criticism delivered with disdain risks alienating people.
In his statement titled “My View of Kemi Badenoch’s Opinion of Nigeria,” the Archbishop admitted there are valid critiques of Nigeria, such as issues of poor governance and corruption. However, he argued that Badenoch’s comments appeared to deepen ethnic and religious divides, a dangerous approach in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation like Nigeria.
Kaigama called on leaders and public figures to strike a balance between honesty and sensitivity, ensuring their words do not inadvertently harm the people they seek to support.
He expressed disappointment that someone of Nigerian heritage would engage in rhetoric that caters to foreign narratives rather than addressing the complex realities facing Nigeria.
