During a recent plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio raised serious concerns about how some Nigerians misuse social media to spread false information. He warned that such behavior could damage society if not controlled.

In a video shared by TV Platinum, Akpabio described social media as “garbage in, garbage out,” meaning that if people use it to share lies or fake news, it will only cause confusion and harm. One major issue he pointed out is the spreading of fake government appointment letters.

According to him, there have been cases where someone is offered an appointment, but before the person even hears about it, a fake letter is created and circulated online saying they rejected the offer.

“You’ll see where appointments will be made, they will go and fake letter-headed paper and write that the person has rejected the appointment,” he said.

Meanwhile, other people use that fake news as a chance to lobby and push for themselves or others to be given the position instead. This creates chaos and unfairness in the system.

He also noted that some people enjoy rushing to social media over every issue, whether it is true or not, without thinking of the consequences. This bad habit can destroy trust and mislead the public.

Finally, Akpabio made it clear that the Senate has not yet finished discussions on the constitutional amendment, and no new state has been created, contrary to some reports online.
