Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has spoken strongly against the wave of politicians leaving opposition parties to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). During an interview with Arise Television, Abaribe questioned the benefits of such moves, especially for the people of the southeast.
He shared a conversation he had with a friend who had already defected. When Abaribe asked what they had gained, the friend mentioned the Southeast Development Commission. But Abaribe wasn’t impressed. He explained that every region in Nigeria already has a similar commission. “So what’s new?” he asked.
Abaribe went further, saying that the current government has practiced what he calls “competitive nepotism” favoritism that is even worse than what people complained about under former President Buhari. He believes the southeast has been unfairly treated, especially when it comes to government appointments.
He gave a clear example: “From the southeast, with 5 ministers for our 5 states, and Ogun state alone has four ministers.” To Abaribe, this shows that the southeast is being sidelined.
He asked, “And you are telling me to follow? To do what?” He made it clear that he wouldn’t join a party that has given his people so little.
Abaribe also said that politicians must bring benefits to their people. “What will I tell my people that I have brought home?” he asked. Instead of following the crowd, he chooses to stand firm, saying, “Good luck to them, but not in our place.
