A PDP chieftain Segun Showunmi has declared that the party leadership cannot reject the Supreme Court’s judgment recognizing Samuel Anyanwu as the rightful National Secretary, regardless of internal opposition.

Showunmi addressed the ongoing crisis within the party during an interview with Arise TV from 15:21, emphasizing the supremacy of judicial decisions over political preferences.

The PDP stalwart stressed that no amount of anger or resistance can override the apex court’s pronouncement on the contentious leadership position. “We can never be too angry or too arrogant to refuse what the judgment of the Supreme Court is. And if they want to do that, good luck to them,” Showunmi stated firmly during the television interview.

He reinforced the principle of judicial authority, noting that court decisions carry more weight than popular opposition. “The strength of 1 million people is not up to the actual pronouncement of the court, and that’s why we created the court system in the world,” he explained.

Showunmi expressed confidence in former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who chairs the party’s reconciliation committee, to navigate the complex internal disputes. “I trust Bukola Saraki, the former Senate President. I trust him very much, to the extent that he understands the issues. What I hope he will be able to do is have the courage of telling them this is the way,” Showunmi said.

However, he acknowledged the challenges Saraki faces in implementing proper solutions amid internal resistance. “There are plenty of noise that will take him off; if he can clearly see the risk, and if he is able to stand firm and let them understand this is the way, and they can be brave enough to accept the consequences of action, then he will succeed,” he noted.

Showunmi warned against allowing dissenting voices to override sound judgment. “If they insist that anybody that offers them the right way or the better interpretation of things, they’re going to be screaming and shouting and have their rabble-rousers just insisting that what they wish is the fact. Good luck to us,” he cautioned.

The PDP chieftain raised concerns about the legitimacy of a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, arguing it failed to meet proper procedural standards. “But I think that last one, we did not have a 99 NEC. Essentially, we had a stakeholder meeting. By the time they now do the right thing and put the notice properly, then we will have the 99 NEC,” Showunmi explained.

He predicted that courts would not recognize the meeting as valid due to procedural failures. “Because I tell you this, no court in Nigeria will accept that that NEC was a NEC, and they themselves know it couldn’t have been a NEC. The minimum standard of having a NEC is that the right people must give you notice,” he stated.

Showunmi dismissed arguments that geographic spread of attendance could validate an improperly convened meeting. “And the Supreme Court cannot tell you this is where it is, and then you say some people are sitting there in Sokoto, sitting down in Maiduguri, sitting down in Zamfara; it won’t make any difference,” he concluded.
