Human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara has shared insights into Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s stance on the issue of amnesty, revealing that the detained leader was firm in his position and unlikely to compromise his principles. Speaking on Symfoni TV from 58:39, Opara recounted a recent conversation with Kanu regarding the topic.

He said, “When I mentioned it on Sunday, the way Kanu looked at me, he’s not that kind of person.” Opara explained that Kanu’s reaction made it clear he would not accept amnesty as a solution, signaling his commitment to his cause and the principles he has been advocating for over the years.

Opara emphasized that this response is consistent with Kanu’s character as someone who prioritizes the rights and fair treatment of his people, rather than taking temporary or superficial concessions. He noted that even in the face of a life sentence, Kanu remains steadfast in his beliefs and focused on the broader struggle for justice.

The lawyer also highlighted that Kanu’s trial was marred by procedural irregularities, including the denial of his right to submit a final written address and the foreclosure of his defense. Opara argued that these irregularities make it all the more important to respect Kanu’s decisions, including his refusal to consider amnesty.

Despite Kanu’s conviction and imprisonment, Opara reaffirmed his commitment to supporting his client through all legal avenues while respecting his autonomy. He stressed that legal advocacy must balance protecting rights with understanding the individual choices of the client, particularly in high-profile cases where political and legal pressures intersect.
