In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has supported the United States government’s decision to place Nigeria on its watch-list over alleged persecution of Christians, saying the move exposes the hypocrisy of Nigerian leaders.

Effiong dismissed claims that America was interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs to exploit the country’s resources.

“America wants to steal our resources? Has that not been what the criminals that have been ruling (ruining) Nigeria since 1960 been doing?” he wrote.

His statement was a direct response to Nigerians who accused the U.S. of using the human rights issue as an excuse to control Nigeria’s natural wealth.

Effiong argued that it was ironic for Nigerians to accuse foreign nations of exploitation when local politicians have long looted the country’s treasury and mismanaged its resources.

He said those in power have done more harm to the nation than any foreign country ever could.

According to him, the United States’ decision to label Nigeria as a country of concern should be seen as a wake-up call rather than an attack.

He insisted that Nigeria’s leaders have repeatedly failed to protect lives, uphold justice, or ensure religious freedom.

Effiong stressed that the real enemies of the country are those who have been in power since independence, enriching themselves while ordinary Nigerians suffer.

Effiong stated that Nigeria’s moral decay and leadership failures made it difficult to reject foreign criticism.

He stated that until Nigerians confront the corruption, oppression, and hypocrisy within their own system, outside powers will continue to question the country’s credibility and human rights record. View, More,
