In an interview with Channels Television from 13:05, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has alleged that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) infiltrated the party’s congress and influenced the selection of candidates.
“If you watch the congress they held, if you watch the video, all the 27 members that defected to APC were there,” the PDP member stated. “They participated in producing candidates. So how do you hand over our party to non-party members? It’s an anomaly, it’s not proper. They’re not members of our party. They’re APC members led by Tony Okocha.”
The accusation highlights the deepening divisions within Rivers State politics, where cross-party defections and leadership tussles have fueled tensions. Tony Okocha, a notable APC leader in the state, was specifically named as the alleged orchestrator of the infiltration, which the PDP member claimed undermines the integrity of the party’s democratic process.
This controversy comes on the heels of a December 2024 judgment by a High Court in Port Harcourt, which nullified APC congresses in the state, citing violations of a prior court order. The ruling fined the APC ₦10 million for proceeding with the congresses despite the legal restraint.
