Victor Iroele, a senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused federal agencies of increasingly targeting opposition figures in what he describes as a coordinated campaign of intimidation.

Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI TV from 9:35, Iroele claimed that agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and even the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) are being deployed to pressure political opponents.

According to him, the alleged harassment has escalated to include unexpected and overwhelming personal tax demands. “All of us in the opposition are being threatened, not only by EFCC, ICPC and also now by FIRS. They will tell you that N300, N400 million for personal tax. It is that bad. These people are not ready to do anything,” he said, expressing concern about what he believes is an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Iroele argued that this climate of intimidation creates fear within opposition circles and threatens democratic engagement. He insisted that several opposition politicians have received similar tax notices, which he alleges are politically motivated, though he did not provide detailed evidence during the interview.

The ADC chieftain warned that the trend, if left unchecked, could weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions by discouraging active political participation. He called on civil society groups, media organisations, and the international community to scrutinise what he described as “targeted intimidation” aimed at suppressing political rivals. View, More,
