During a recent interview on Arise Television from 16.10, Ireti Bakare-Yusuf shared her views on the court ruling against Senator Natasha Akpoti. The court had ordered Senator Akpoti to pay a fine and publish an apology in three national newspapers over her suspension case against the Nigerian Senate.
Ireti Bakare-Yusuf expressed her support for Senator Akpoti and said if she were in her shoes, she would have handled it differently. “If it were me, I’d say to them, ‘You can keep that fine. I’ve already won the bigger judgment,’” Yusuf said. She explained that the court had already confirmed that Akpoti’s suspension was wrong and unfair.
She added that the court has asked for an apology in three newspapers, she would have published it in twenty just to return to serving her people. “You want it in three Newspapers, I’ll give it to you in 20 newspapers, just let me get back to representing my constituents,” she said. “The most important thing is that she has been vindicated. The court agreed that what happened to her was excessive.”
Yusuf emphasized that stopping a senator from doing her job also stops the people she represents from having their voice heard in government. Although she hasn’t met Senator Akpoti, she praised her for standing strong.
