The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has continued to provoke heated reactions, with gender rights advocate Ireti Bakare-Yusuf openly challenging Senate President Godswill Akpabio over what she described as unfair treatment of women in politics.
Speaking during a televised panel discussion from 23:25, Bakare-Yusuf criticized the Senate’s refusal to reinstate Akpoti-Uduaghan despite a Federal High Court ruling declaring the suspension unconstitutional. She accused the leadership of deliberately sidelining one of the few women in the upper chamber and insisted that women in politics deserve a level playing field.
“I’m not afraid to compete with you; I want what women have been asking for,” Ireti Bakare-Yusuf fired back at Akpabio, making it clear that her call was not for special favors but for fairness and respect for constitutional rights.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended in March 2025 on allegations of misconduct. The decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many analysts arguing that the prolonged standoff robs her constituents of representation and undermines the rule of law.
While some commentators, like public affairs analyst Theophilus Akatugba, believe the suspension is more about political ego than gender bias, voices like Bakare-Yusuf’s insist the case reflects deeper challenges women face in Nigeria’s political system.
The clash of perspectives has sharpened public debate about gender equity, constitutional accountability, and the role of the Senate leadership in upholding democratic values. Explore , More , News>>>
