A senior member of Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has publicly acknowledged allegations facing Senate President Godswill Akpabio while emphasizing the legal processes already in motion, according to video footage posted by Symfoni TV FROM 19:14.
In his remarks before his Senate colleagues, Bamidele offered personal sympathy to Akpabio while carefully distancing himself from direct involvement in the sensitive matter.
“Mr. President, Godswill Akpabio, I sympathize with you as a man being accused of s£xual harassment,” Senator Bamidele stated during what appeared to be an official Senate session.
The lawmaker proceeded to explicitly recuse himself from offering substantive commentary on the allegations themselves, noting: “I am not going to comment on that because there will be ample opportunity for the relevant authorities to deal with it.”
Bamidele then provided context regarding the procedural status of the matter, highlighting actions taken by multiple parties involved in the controversy.
“But I know, dear colleagues, that Distinguished Senator Natasha went to court on a matter. Then, she appeared on Arise TV on another matter, talking about sexual harassment,” he explained, referencing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has been publicly linked to allegations against the Senate President.
The senator further revealed that Akpabio’s spouse had initiated her own legal proceedings in response to the allegations.
“The wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Unoma Akpabio, on behalf of the family and children, went to court and parties have been served regarding an allegation of s£xual harassment,” Bamidele stated, confirming that formal legal channels have been activated by the Akpabio family.
These comments reflect the increasingly public nature of a controversy that has captured national attention and raised questions about conduct within Nigeria’s highest legislative body.
