According to a report by Vanguard published on June 28, 2025, Iran transformed what could have been a solemn farewell into a bold spectacle of defiance on Saturday, as it held a state funeral for dozens of military commanders killed in its recent war with Israel. Though the 12-day conflict left at least 627 Iranians dead compared to 28 Israeli casualties, Tehran used the funeral to project strength rather than grief.
Thousands flooded the streets of Tehran, where coffins of slain commanders — including top IRGC figures like Hossein Salami and Mohammad Bagheri — were draped in national flags and paraded alongside replicas of ballistic missiles. Giant banners taunted Israel, with one reading, “Boom boom Tel Aviv.”
President Masoud Pezeshkian and key military officials led the procession, which began at Enghelab (Revolution) Square and moved through the capital with chants, eulogies, and a display more reminiscent of a national parade than mourning.
State TV declared: “The ceremony to honour the martyrs has officially started,” capturing crowds waving flags and holding portraits of the dead.
