In a recent video on YouTube from 38:24, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has stressed the importance of work as a prerequisite for marriage, highlighting the biblical order of responsibilities as set out in the book of Genesis.

Speaking during a sermon, Adeboye referenced Genesis 2:15-18, noting that God assigned Adam the task of tending the Garden of Eden before creating Eve. He used the passage to advise young men and women to prioritize gainful employment before considering marriage.

“Genesis chapter 2 from verse 15 to 18 shows that God gave man work before He gave him a wife,” Adeboye said. “That is why when some people got angry when I told my daughters, ‘Don’t marry a jobless man,’ and they claimed they know the Bible, I told them they don’t know the Bible.”

Adeboye emphasized that the divine sequence underscores the importance of responsibility and provision within a marriage. “He gave Adam work. Take care of this garden before He now said, ‘I think this fellow should have a wife,’” he explained.

The cleric maintained that his counsel is rooted in scripture and practical wisdom, urging young men to first secure a means of livelihood before seeking a life partner. “You have no work; don’t look for a wife,” he said, reiterating his position.

Adeboye’s remarks sparked renewed conversations on the intersection of faith, marriage, and economic stability. His statement comes as many young couples face growing financial challenges amid rising living costs in Nigeria.
