According to a report by The Sun on July 25, 2025, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advised President Bola Tinubu to focus on resolving internal issues within his administration—particularly the widely observed tension between himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima—before turning his attention to matters concerning opposition parties. Atiku issued this warning following reports that the presidency may be fueling divisions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), an emerging coalition seen as a potential challenger in the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on July 25, 2025, and signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku expressed disappointment over what he described as misplaced priorities by the Tinubu administration. Rather than tackling the country’s economic hardship and political instability, he said the presidency appears more interested in weakening opposition voices.
“President Tinubu should first resolve the visible rift between himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima and fix Nigeria’s broken economy before meddling in the affairs of the ADC,” Atiku stated.
He added that it is worrisome to see a government deploy public resources to deepen internal crises in other parties instead of addressing challenges like inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. The former vice president emphasized that such political gamesmanship threatens democratic values and weakens public trust in leadership.
