According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Sunday, 17 August 2025, the family of 34-year-old businessman, Obinna Kaburu has been thrown into mourning after he and his six-months pregnant wife, Ifeyinwa were brutally murdered by gunmen in Abia State.
In an emotional interview with Punch Newspapers, the deceased’s father, Onyekwere Kaburu, recounted the circumstances that led to the tragedy. He explained that Obinna had returned home from his shop and asked his wife to prepare their evening meal. Moments later, he reportedly called her back to attend to their Point of Sale (PoS) business when a customer arrived.
“The wife had gone to the house to prepare their night meal when he called her to come and attend to the PoS business when somebody came to withdraw some money. Not aware that the gunmen had shot her husband, my son’s wife walked in and met them. They also killed the wife and the PoS customer. His wife was six months pregnant,” Onyekwere narrated.
The grieving father who struggled to hold back tears, said the loss of both his son and daughter-in-law in a single day has left a void that may never be filled. “Losing my son was already painful, but losing his pregnant wife alongside him is depressing. I can’t explain the emptiness it has left in me,” he lamented.
The killings have sparked widespread outrage in the community, where residents described Obinna as a hardworking businessman and a promising young man whose life was cut short by senseless violence.
Community leaders and residents have called on security agencies to urgently fish out the perpetrators, while also demanding stronger measures to curb the rising spate of gun attacks that continue to plague the region.
