Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has claimed that the popular television presenter Dr. Reuben Abati and his wife sought for financial assistance from Wike during his legal troubles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The heated exchange emerged during an interview with Arise TV 4:05, where Olayinka expressed outrage over Abati’s criticism of his principal. “He (Reuben Abati) said the minister was rude, he is this and that; he was using unprintable words that I was not expecting to hear from somebody who has functioned as Editorial Chairman of Guardian Newspapers,” Olayinka stated.

Olayinka claimed Abati had personally sought Wike’s help during his EFCC investigation. “When he had an issue with EFCC and he had to pay back the alleged Dansuki loot, himself and his wife knew the road to Wike’s house to go and beg for a bailout, which he obviously got, and Wike was not rude that time,” he alleged.

The FCT Minister’s aide questioned Abati’s journalistic ethics, arguing that his defense of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechicompromised his professional neutrality. He expressed shock at what he perceived as Abati’s transformation from journalist to political advocate of the Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

The FCT Minister’s aide accused Abati of presenting a false moral image despite his past political involvement. “He has always come to this station to present himself as a moral police, and he will not one day tell us that at one point in his life, he’s a politician, a member of PDP, at some point in his life,” Olayinka said.

He referenced Abati’s previous political candidacy to support his argument. “He was PDP governorship, deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State, and he was comfortable having his picture displayed with that of somebody who was allegedly wanted by the American government,” the aide claimed.
