Richard Akinnola, a lawyer and human rights activist, has spoken about Lt. SOS Echendu (rtd), one of the key soldiers involved in the failed 1990 coup led by Major Gideon Orkar.

In an exclusive interview with Edmund Obilo, Akinnola said Lt. Echendu was interviewed by Punch some years ago. He said in the interview, Echendu said during the coup attempt he saw General Ibrahim Babangida, who was the Head of State, and had the chance to kill him but chose not to because he wanted to capture Babangida alive

In Akinnola’s words: “They broke into the armory both in Ikeja cantonment and Ojo cantonment. As a matter of fact the soldier who was in charge of Dodan Barracks, I have forgotten his name (Echendu), he is one Igbo chap who was among them and my friend Azuka who is based in U.S interviewed him in Punch some few years ago, and he said that he saw Babangida and he could have blasted the whole place but he didn’t want to, he said he wanted to capture him alive.
