The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has shared a touching story about the difficult living conditions faced by some judges in Nigeria. Speaking at the official flag-off of the design and construction of houses for Heads of Courts, Wike revealed that a senior judge who was transferred to Abuja had to live with his brother for two years because he could not afford his own accommodation.
In a video shared by ESET TV from 7:08, Wike expressed concern that such conditions make it hard for judges to focus on their work. He explained that it was unfair for a highly respected justice to be “squatting” in someone else’s home while trying to perform important national duties. According to him, the situation highlights the need for better welfare and housing support for judicial officers.
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s new policy, which ensures that judges will be given personal houses when they retire. Wike said the policy would bring comfort, dignity, and stability to the judiciary.
The minister also recalled how, during his time as governor of Rivers State, he made it a rule that no judge should retire without owning a house. He said his government either built houses for them or gave them the cash equivalent.
Wike emphasized that judges deserve decent living conditions, as they play a vital role in delivering justice and maintaining peace in the nation.
