Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s former vice presidential candidate, has claimed that a former Nigerian president was once attacked by terrorists — an event he described as completely unprecedented in the country’s history.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed said the incident occurred in 2014, although he did not disclose the name of the former president involved.
He noted that such an attack had never before happened in Nigeria and questioned why it was not widely discussed or treated with the seriousness it deserved at the time.
“In the history of Nigeria, a former president being attacked by terrorists had never happened. It was unprecedented,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
He expressed concern over the silence that followed the incident, saying that when he first spoke about it in 2022, many people ignored or dismissed his comments.
Baba-Ahmed pointed out that former Nigerian leaders are usually treated with dignity and allowed to live in peace after their tenure, even when they make mistakes while in office.
However, he claimed that this particular former president was treated differently, raising questions about the motive behind the terrorist attack and the unusual level of hostility he faced.
He said, “Ordinarily, once you are done with office in Nigeria, you are respected and forgiven. But this one was treated differently. Why?”
Baba-Ahmed did not give further details about the attack but maintained that the event marked a turning point in how political transitions and leadership legacies are handled in Nigeria.
