The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Reverend Joseph Hayab, has criticized the deployment of large numbers of police officers to guard commercial banks across the country.
During an interview with Arise TV from 8:00, Rev. Hayab questioned the practice of using police personnel for bank security duties. “A good number of police who are supposed to be securing Nigerians are securing our banks, which ordinarily the banks are supposed to recruit their security men and then take them to police college to be trained to go and work for them? But they are taking advantage of what is going on and are taking our police,” he said.
The CAN chairman provided an estimate of the scale of police deployment to banks. “Imagine in a city like Abuja or Kaduna or Kano, if you have 300 banks, then the possibility that you have around 300 to 400 police—if not 600 police—guarding and usually there are more than one. They have no reason to be there,” Hayab stated.
He argued that proper redeployment of these officers could significantly improve public security. Hayab also criticized some security personnel for prioritizing personal comfort over national duty, noting that individuals seek postings to guard VIPs rather than defend citizens.
He said that this mentality must change and that better deployment strategies would free up officers currently assigned to bank security, making them available to address Nigeria’s broader security challenges. View, More,
