In a recent interview with Arise News from 11:08, Nigerian lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo shared his views on leadership, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful communication. His comments came amid the public discourse surrounding Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his decision to join other leaders in celebrating the 90th birthday of former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).

Okonkwo, known for his direct and analytical approach to politics, stated:

“I’ve always said that it’s good for a leader to always think before he talks. In other words, before you make a statement, it must be a statement you have thought through, and you should be able to stand by it. You should be able to articulate your view at any point and stand by it.”

He further explained that a leader who believes in what they say should not feel the need to offer an explanation. However, if the leader does explain their position, then they must be held accountable for both their actions and words.

The remarks from Okonkwo follow Peter Obi’s controversial decision to celebrate General Gowon, who led Nigeria during the civil war. Obi’s actions drew criticism from sections of the Igbo community who still harbor resentment towards Gowon’s role during the Biafran conflict. However, Obi defended his decision, citing forgiveness as a key principle in his belief system.

While Okonkwo didn’t directly critique Obi, his comments seemed to reflect the need for leaders to be prepared for the consequences of their decisions, especially when they touch on sensitive historical issues.

The interview concluded with Okonkwo reaffirming the importance of accountability: “If he needed to explain and he explained, then you should hold him responsible for his own actions and for his own words.”
