In a recent statement, former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has written to the National Assembly, as reported by PUNCH.

In his letter, he called for a constitutional amendment to create a single six-year term for the President and state governors.

Atiku submitted his proposals to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review.

He also suggested that the presidency should rotate between the North and South.

This rotation would happen within the six-year single term, allowing leaders from each region to take turns in office.

This is not a new idea.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had also supported a similar proposal during his time in office.

After the 2023 elections, Atiku has continued to push for this system.

In his letter, Atiku urged the lawmakers to change Section 135(2) of the Constitution.

“The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the federation on a single term of six years, flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years respectively,” he said.
