In a recent video shared by Channels TV from 11:28, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the vital importance of upholding democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. Akpabio highlighted the role of the National Assembly, not just as a legislative body, but as a cornerstone of the democratic process in the country. He emphasized that the Assembly’s responsibilities extend beyond lawmaking to include ensuring that there are effective checks and balances within the government.

Akpabio also addressed comments made by former Governor Kayode Fayemi, who had referenced a coup in a previous discussion. Although Fayemi later apologized for his remarks, Akpabio used the opportunity to stress the seriousness of such topics and the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic values. He pointed out that the concept of a coup is antithetical to democracy, as it involves the denial of fundamental freedoms.

The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to maintaining the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability. He noted that these principles are essential for Nigeria’s growth and development, and the Assembly plays a crucial role in safeguarding them. According to Akpabio, the National Assembly’s work is central to fostering an environment where the rule of law prevails, ensuring that every Nigerian has the opportunity to succeed.

This commitment to accountability and transparency, he noted, is crucial for the continued progress of the nation.

He also took the opportunity to address younger members of the legal community, encouraging them to understand the gravity of discussions about coups and the importance of upholding democratic principles. Akpabio emphasized that the rule of law is the foundation of any democratic society, and it is the responsibility of all Nigerians, especially those in positions of power, to ensure that these principles are respected. He stressed that the National Assembly would continue to play its part in ensuring that the rule of law is upheld and that the country remains on a path of democratic progress.
