According to Arise Television, Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, condemned the National Assembly’s decision to raise Senators’ allowances from N14 million to N21 million, calling it “illegal and contemptuous.”
Falana cited a 2021 Federal High Court ruling by Justice Chuka Obiozor, which affirmed that only the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has the authority to set legislators’ salaries and allowances.
Femi Falana noted that the controversy began when Senator Shehu Sani revealed large payments to legislators in March 2018, leading to a 2021 court ruling that invalidated those allowances.
Femi Falana also highlighted the disparity between Senators’ allowances and the Minimum Wage Act, which sets the minimum wage at N70,000.
In Femi Falana’s words, he said, “I will take legal action against the National Assembly for their illegal monthly allowances for Senators. It is unacceptable that Senators are reportedly receiving N21 million each month for ‘running costs.”….Vìêw–Morê
