Hon. Afam Ogene, a longtime ally of Peter Obi, has dismissed recent criticisms of the former Labour Party presidential candidate by actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, describing the attacks as politically motivated.
Ogene, who represents the Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State and recently defected to the NDC, made the remarks during an interview on SYMFONI TV while reacting to Okonkwo’s recent comments against Obi.
The lawmaker said Okonkwo’s criticism should not be taken seriously, insisting that the former Labour Party spokesman was merely playing a role designed by political interests.
“Kenneth Okonkwo is simply an actor. An actor is one who plays any assigned role. He is clearly playing a script. The only difference is that he has changed stage,” Ogene said during the interview.
The comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several former allies of Obi publicly taking differing positions on the future of the opposition movement. Okonkwo, who was one of Obi’s vocal supporters during the 2023 presidential campaign, has in recent months emerged as one of his critics.
Ogene, however, maintained that Obi remains focused on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians rather than political distractions.
