Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Professor Usman Yusuf, has reflected on the controversies and corruption allegations that trailed his tenure in office.
Speaking during an interview from 4:55 on SYMFONI TV on Wednesday, May 13 2026, Yusuf said his time at the NHIS was marked by persistent conflicts and accusations from the onset of his administration.
According to him, the frequent media reports alleging that he misappropriated billions of naira became so overwhelming that he stopped bringing newspapers home. He recalled joking with his wife whenever she read reports claiming he stole N10 billion, saying the figures were exaggerated and sarcastically remarking that the writers “did not know mathematics.”
Yusuf further disclosed that although he was expected to serve a five-year tenure at the NHIS, he only spent three years in office due to the numerous challenges and controversies surrounding his administration.
