According to a report by The Sun on Monday, May 11, 2026, Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has reaffirmed that former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, remains committed to serving only a single four-year term if elected as Nigeria’s president.
Umeh made the statement on Sunday while appearing on Politics Today, a programme aired by Channels Television.
During the interview, he explained that Obi has continued to demonstrate an understanding of the political realities surrounding Nigeria’s power-sharing structure and the importance of maintaining national unity.
According to the senator, Obi deliberately decided not to interfere with the expected turn of Northern Nigeria in the country’s informal rotational leadership arrangement.
He said the former Anambra governor believes that respecting the balance between the North and South remains important for political stability and peaceful coexistence across the country.
Umeh stated that Obi understands the sensitivity of the zoning principle that has shaped Nigeria’s democratic system for years.
He noted that the former presidential candidate considers adherence to the unwritten agreement between the two regions as necessary for preserving fairness, trust, and national cohesion.
The lawmaker further explained that Obi limited his presidential ambition to the four years currently available to the Southern region because he does not want to take over the period widely expected to belong to the North.
He added that Obi recognises the need to avoid actions that could create political tension or deepen divisions in the country.
Speaking further, Umeh said Obi has already begun preparing strategies for governance with the understanding that he would have only one tenure to implement his programmes and policies.
He maintained that the former governor is focused on how to achieve meaningful results within a four-year administration if given the opportunity to lead the country.
He said, “He [Obi] has already started making plans on how to deliver his promises to Nigerians within four years.”….Read_More…
