In a recent interview from 7:58 on Arise TV, Nigerian lawyer and public policy analyst Chris Nwokobia spoke on internal opposition dynamics, presidential ambitions, and the evolving political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

During the interview, Nwokobia stated, “Atiku Abubakar is interested in the presidency; it is not necessarily about defeating the APC.” He made the remark while analyzing the motivations driving key political actors within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

He referenced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, arguing that political ambition often extends beyond party competition and reflects long-standing personal and strategic interests within the country’s elite political class.

Nwokobia explained that in Nigeria’s evolving political environment, many actors are driven primarily by the pursuit of the presidency itself, rather than a unified ideological mission to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

According to him, this reality continues to weaken opposition coordination, as competing ambitions among key figures make it difficult to build a single, disciplined coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

He noted that while public discourse often focuses on defeating the ruling party, internal calculations among opposition leaders suggest that individual presidential aspirations remain dominant in shaping political decisions and alliances.

Nwokobia further argued that this dynamic contributes to fragmentation within opposition blocs, as stakeholders often prioritize positioning, negotiation, and future bargaining power over immediate electoral unity.

He stressed that unless opposition figures are willing to subordinate personal ambition to a collective agenda, efforts to mount a credible challenge in 2027 may remain ineffective.

The analyst added that Nigeria’s political history repeatedly shows that divided opposition forces struggle against incumbents, particularly when major actors pursue parallel presidential interests rather than a unified strategy.
