In a recent interview from 10:33 on Symfoni TV, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu addressed the continued tension in the southeast, urging agitators to adopt peaceful and non-violent methods in expressing their demands. He noted that the region has suffered significant economic and social setbacks, with many residents living in fear and businesses struggling to survive as a result of recurring disruptions.
Speaking on the nature of the agitation, Kalu argued that meaningful progress can never be achieved through armed confrontation. He maintained that the destruction witnessed in several communities contradicts the very ideals the movement claims to champion. It was during this part of his remarks that he stated, according to Kalu, “Even if they want Biafra they should drop arms and go with flags to demand what they want.” He emphasized that peaceful advocacy remains the only credible and sustainable path for any group seeking political recognition.
Kalu also reflected on conversations he had with the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, explaining that even Ojukwu believed the region must never again resort to conflict. He stressed that the youth must understand the long-term consequences of instability, noting that frequent sit-at-home orders, threats, and violence have driven investors away and weakened community life.
Responding to critics who accuse him of opposing the agitation, Kalu dismissed the claims and insisted that his concern is rooted in the safety and prosperity of the people. He said that anyone truly fighting for the southeast should prioritize rebuilding trust, restoring lost businesses, and encouraging dialogue rather than fueling fear.
Kalu ended the interview by calling on leaders at all levels to intensify efforts toward political solutions. He said that unity, openness, and responsible engagement are essential if the region hopes to achieve peace and secure a better future for its residents. View, More,
