Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams has expressed deep concern over the growing sophistication of weapons used by bandits and terrorists across Nigeria, warning that the situation has escalated far beyond ordinary criminal activity.

Adams made the remarks during an interview from 6:18 on Channels Television, where he analysed the rising wave of violent attacks and the challenges facing the country’s security agencies.

According to Adams, the level of firepower currently being deployed by criminal groups signals a dangerous shift that requires urgent and strategic government intervention. He noted that the problem is no longer limited to petty crimes or armed robbery but has evolved into full-blown insurgency and guerrilla-style warfare.

“The challenge we are having in Nigeria is beyond thefts and robberies. We are talking of people moving with some weapons to the extent of moving with machine guns and anti-aircraft weapons on their shoulders,” he said, expressing shock at the ease with which such heavy weapons circulate among non-state actors.

Adams warned that the unchecked proliferation of arms poses a grave threat to national stability, stating that these sophisticated weapons give criminal groups undue advantage over security operatives, particularly in remote communities where response capability is limited.

He urged the Federal Government to intensify border surveillance, strengthen intelligence gathering, and dismantle the networks responsible for smuggling high-grade weapons into the country. Adams also emphasised the need for improved coordination among security agencies, arguing that fragmented efforts allow criminal elements to exploit loopholes.
