Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams has praised the Nigerian government for its swift intervention during the recent failed military coup attempt in the Republic of Benin. Adams made the remarks during an interview from 2:39 on Channels Television, where he discussed regional security cooperation and Nigeria’s role in stabilising neighbouring countries.
Reacting to reports that President Patrice Talon received crucial support from Abuja at the peak of the attempted takeover, Adams said the development underscores Nigeria’s long-standing capacity to influence peace and security within West Africa. He emphasised that despite internal security challenges, Nigeria remains a dominant force in the sub-region with both the experience and resources to intervene when necessary.
According to him, the assistance rendered to Benin Republic was not only appropriate but also a demonstration of Nigeria’s responsibility as a key regional power. “We have the capacity, that was one of the reasons we assisted Benin Republic yesterday,”. Adams stated, noting that Nigeria has historically played stabilising roles across West Africa.
Adams explained that without Nigeria’s timely support, the political situation in Benin could have escalated into a broader crisis with spillover effects across the sub-region. He added that West African nations share security interdependence, making cooperation essential for preventing conflicts and safeguarding democratic institutions.
He further urged the Nigerian government to leverage this capacity domestically by strengthening its internal security architecture. Adams argued that Nigeria’s ability to assist its neighbours should also reflect in its response to internal threats such as terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry. View, More,
