Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the former governor of Anambra State, has voiced significant apprehension regarding the violent reactions in some parts of the South-East following Nnamdi Kanu’s life imprisonment, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a December 7, 2025 interview with Arise News from 09:26, Kalu cautioned that the assaults on citizens and the harsh enforcement of disruptions to Monday businesses have caused more damage to the region than any political issues could warrant.
He pointed out that threats and intimidation have created fear among traders and workers, hindered commerce, and fostered an unstable daily life. Kalu underscored that such actions jeopardize the very communities that separatist movements claim to defend, weakening their declared goals and distancing broader regional support.
His comments resonate with earlier statements made in November during an interview on Channels Television, where he discussed the severe impact of ongoing separatist movements on individuals and local businesses. Kalu observed that while media narratives often focus on confrontations between security forces and militant groups, it is the everyday residents who bear the brunt of the sustained instability and economic turmoil.
He proposed that Kanu’s sentencing could have served as a catalyst for the movement to reassess its approach and engage in political dialogue. Instead, the ongoing use of armed tactics against civilians jeopardizes the credibility of political advocacy and perpetuates a culture of fear and uncertainty.
Kalu called on political leaders, community elders, and regional participants to prioritize dialogue and reduction of tensions, stressing that meaningful advancement relies on restoring order, safeguarding businesses, and ensuring a secure environment for all residents. He encouraged those advocating for Biafra to renounce violence, pursue their goals through peaceful means, and negotiate their demands, rather than causing harm to the communities they purport to represent.
