Senator Sani Hanga, who represents Kano Central in the National Assembly, has issued a stern warning against the creation of state police in Nigeria, stating that such a move could have catastrophic consequences for national unity and democracy.
His statement was revealed in a report that was published by VANGUARD on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
He made the statement while responding to questions about the ongoing debate on restructuring Nigeria’s security framework and the push for decentralizing police operations.
In the video, Hanga referenced the recent Emirship crisis in Kano, asserting that if state police had been in place at the time, the a full-blown civil conflict. He emphasized that the centralized police system played a crucial role in preventing violence and maintaining order.
The senator expressed deep concern that state governors might exploit state-controlled police forces to intimidate political opponents and suppress dissent. He warned that such a development could erode civil liberties and destabilize already fragile regions.
“If there is a state police, there would have been a civil war in Kano. I’m telling you as a politician. There would have been a civil war,” he said. View, More,
