In an interview with Daily Independent on Sunday, December 7, 2025, Chief Martin Onovo, a former presidential candidate and policy expert, has warned that Nigeria’s relationship with the United States could worsen if the government does not address rising concerns about targeted killings in the country.
He spoke about the issue in an interview, focusing on recent reports that Nigeria might be classified as a Country of Particular Concern due to religiously motivated violence.
Onovo said that the primary problem is the ongoing violence, which he described as genocide.
He argued that this violence could be controlled if the government showed strong political will.
According to him, uniting all religious communities, including Muslims, Christians, and traditional faith practitioners, against armed groups could significantly reduce the attacks.
He noted that the United States is closely monitoring developments in Nigeria.
Onovo explained that the US has an extensive intelligence network in the country and is aware of political and governance issues affecting leadership.
He suggested that the US may already have concerns about the administration’s handling of security and corruption, which could influence diplomatic relations.
“Jagaban Tinubu lived in the US and the US maintains a very extensive international intelligence network. They know that Jagaban Tinubu lacks basic education. They know he is close to 90 years old. They know he forfeited $460,000.00 proceeds of narcotics trafficking in Chicago, USA. Remember his FBI files. They know that Tinubu lost the election woefully and was imposed with armoured tanks. They know he was classified as the third most corrupt ruler in the world,” he said. View, More,
