Popular Nigerian actress and DJ, Dorcas Shola Fapson, widely known as Ms DSF, has opened up about her difficult experience attending school in Nigeria after being raised in the United Kingdom.
Speaking in an interview from 5:25 with JAY ON AIR, she recounted how, at the age of 13, she was told she was going on a two-week holiday to Nigeria, only to discover she had been enrolled in school without prior notice.
Ms DSF explained that she first attended school in Ibadan before moving to Lagos, where she faced a harsh reality that sharply contrasted with her upbringing in the UK. She expressed shock at the widespread use of corporal punishment in Nigerian schools, a practice she described as traumatic and culturally jarring.
She emphasized that in the UK, such disciplinary methods are considered abuse and are punishable by law, highlighting the stark differences in child protection standards between the two countries.
According to her, the experience left a lasting impression and shaped her perception of Nigeria during that period of her life.
Her words, “I was born and raised in the UK. When I was 13 years, I got shipped here. They told me I was going for a two-week holiday. I did my secondary school in the UK, then I came to Nigeria for one year. I went to Ibadan, then I came to a school in Lagos, and I absolutely hated Nigeria at that time because they used to beat shege. They used to beat children in school. You can’t beat a child in the UK—you will go to jail.” View, More,
