Director of Research for the Afenifere Sociopolitical Yoruba Cultural Group, Dr. Akin Fapounda, has stated that the organization has no regrets about endorsing former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election, arguing that the Yoruba people have enjoyed adequate representation in national leadership.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV  from 5:21, Dr. Fapounda addressed criticism from fellow Yoruba regarding the endorsement. “My Yoruba brethren, they think and behave as if we are in Oduduwa Republic, where Yorubas can be entitled. It can be our turn, but the Nigerian landscape belongs to everybody now. Obasanjo has served 8 years as President, Yemi Osinbajo has served 8 years as the vice president. If you want to be inclusive and bring the Igbos together, it’s only the Igbos that have not been president. Afenifere believes in equity and justice,” he said.

The Afenifere leader expressed the group’s confidence in Obi’s qualifications under the late Pa Adebanjo’s leadership. Dr. Fapounda stated that no one could doubt Obi’s competence, acknowledging that while no human is perfect, the former Anambra governor represented the most suitable candidate at that time.

He explained that Afenifere’s decision to support Obi was driven by principles of national unity and the need to include the Southeast in Nigeria’s leadership structure. View, More,
