Professor Anthony Kila, the Director of the Centre for International Advancement and Professional Studies, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to nominate former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as an ambassador.

Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday from 3:51, December 4, 2025, Kila labeled the nomination a bad choice, questioning the undue haste of the appointment.

The criticism follows the submission of Professor Yakubu’s name to the Senate as part of a batch of non-career ambassadorial nominees.

This nomination comes shortly after Yakubu concluded his extended eight-year tenure leading the electoral body, during which he oversaw two major and highly contentious general elections.

The process requires the Senate to screen the nominee and ultimately confirm the appointment before he can take up a diplomatic post abroad.

Kila argued that after eight years in such an important and demanding role, the former INEC Chairman should not be rushing into another job.

Instead, he suggested Yakubu should take time to reflect on the electoral process he managed and potentially write a book about it.

He stressed that it would be irresponsible of him, as a public affairs commentator, to remain silent on a nomination he views as strategically unsound and inappropriate for a person who recently held a position central to national unity and governance.

Kila said, “It will be bad of me to come on National TV and keep quiet over the nomination of Mahmood Yakubu. That is a bad choice. What is the essence after eight years of leading INEC to need another job. Let them go and reflect about the election he conducted and maybe write a book about it. What is the rush to make him ambassador immediately? That is a bad call.” View, More,
