A Former Federal Lawmaker, Senator Garba Marafa, has alleged that individuals within the Ministry of Defence are sabotaging the Nigerian government’s security efforts from the inside.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV from 9:04, Senator Marafa called on the president to remove questionable individuals from strategic positions. “There are people that are sabotaging the system even right inside the Ministry of Defence. And the president can tackle them by ensuring that all persons of questionable character, be it uniformed or non-uniformed, are removed around the command centre,” he said.
The senator also attributed illegal mining as a contributing factor to insecurity, noting that authorities know the miners’ identities and locations but lack the political will to stop them. “On the issue of mining, mining is a contributory problem to the problems of insecurity. But we know who the miners are. We know where they are. We know what they are doing. Now, does the government have the political will to stop them? Services were suspended in Zamfara. Mining activities were suspended. Movement was curtailed. But all that didn’t work because there is just no political will,” he stated.
Senator Marafa warned that even the most capable military leadership cannot succeed if saboteurs operate from within. While expressing confidence in the newly appointed general’s capacity and capabilities, he urged the federal government to provide the necessary support and resources for the minister to succeed in his mission.
