Just two months after emergency rule was lifted in Rivers State and democratic institutions were restored, friction has once again emerged between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly under Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

According to Daily Trust, at its 31st Legislative Sitting, the Assembly criticised the worsening condition of public schools, citing the vandalism at Township School in Port Harcourt and several other locations.

Lawmakers expressed frustration over the dilapidated state of infrastructure in primary and secondary schools and accused the executive of failing to take meaningful action.

Relying on findings from the House Committee on Education, members of the Assembly also raised questions about the utilisation of state funds. They pressed Governor Fubara to explain how over N600 billion; said to have been left behind by former Sole Administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas (rtd), upon leaving office in September—had been managed or spent.

While Paul Ibe, the spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was reacting to the development, he faulted the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and also faulted the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“By the way, what’s Wike cooking again? I hope he is not laying the foundation for another state of emergency in Rivers,” he said. View, More,
