Senator Danjuma Goje, a former Governor of Gombe State and one of the most senior lawmakers in the National Assembly, has strongly criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for facilitating a meeting at the Presidential Villa while plenary was in session.
Goje made the remarks during an interview on TV Platinum from 1:18, where he recounted how some senators approached him inside the chamber to discuss an unscheduled meeting at Aso Rock even as other lawmakers remained seated awaiting the continuation of proceedings.
Goje explained that he found the approach and timing of the invitation deeply inappropriate, insisting it violated long-established parliamentary norms. He said the manner in which the meeting was being arranged suggested a disregard for the sanctity of the chamber and the collective responsibility of all senators.
According to him, he immediately distanced himself from the plan, making his objections clear to those who relayed the message. “I’m opposed to this one. I don’t want to be part of it. I will not come, it’s unparliamentary. It’s wrong,” he declared, emphasising that such conduct undermines both the dignity and independence of the Senate.
Goje stressed that while executive-legislative consultations are normal in democratic systems, they must follow proper procedures and must not interfere with plenary, which remains the highest expression of legislative business. Anything short of that, he warned, risks eroding public trust in the National Assembly. View, More,
