During a recent interview on Arise News from 10;20, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong delivered a sharp critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominations, focusing particularly on the inclusion of Femi Fani-Kayode. Effiong argued that Fani-Kayode’s inconsistency and unpredictable public behavior make him unsuitable for such a sensitive diplomatic role.
Effiong began by questioning the credibility of appointing individuals who, in his view, lack the stability and judgment required to represent Nigeria on the international stage. He directly criticized Fani-Kayode, describing him as someone whose public positions fluctuate too frequently to inspire confidence. In his words, “Fani Kayode that is now being nominated as an ambassador is a man that changes his mind every minute.”
He went on to point out what he described as a pattern of questionable selections among the nominees. Effiong specifically referenced Reno Omokri, another controversial figure on the list, and expressed concern about the message the government was sending by elevating such individuals. According to him, “Look at Reno Omokri, here is the same man that has gone on public record to speak bad about this same president.”
Effiong argued that appointing Omokri to a diplomatic position appears to reward behavior that many Nigerians view as inconsistent and inflammatory. He questioned whether the president’s decision was based on merit or political convenience. “Now you are telling Nigerians that he’s the best person to represent Nigeria as an ambassador, because he has become a nuisance on social media?” he asked.
