During a thanksgiving service in Abuja, Chief Olisa Metuh shared the events that shaped his decision to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a report by Daily Trust on Sunday 30th, 2025, he recounted a specific incident from his period of difficulty that, according to him, left a lasting impression. This followed earlier statements in which he explained why he felt abandoned by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Metuh explained that during the height of his legal and political challenges, he received support from an unexpected quarter. He said that while he expected solidarity from his former party, the assistance he eventually received came from individuals he had long regarded as political rivals, reinforcing his earlier claims about being left alone during his ordeal.
He recalled that at a time when he was battling what he described as significant personal and legal pressures, the then-opposition leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, intervened in a manner that caught him by surprise. This intervention, he stated, stood in contrast to the silence he experienced from those within the PDP whom he had worked closely with for years.
According to Metuh, Tinubu delegated the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, to visit him during that turbulent period. The visit, he said, was not ceremonial but a demonstration of concern at a time when political differences might ordinarily have prevented such a gesture.
He noted that Tinubu’s decision to send Gbajabiamila occurred while he was still facing intense scrutiny and public attention. Metuh explained that the outreach came at a moment when he had been expecting support from party allies but found himself relying primarily on his family for encouragement.
The former PDP spokesman said the interaction with the then Speaker made a significant impact because it came from someone he had frequently criticised during political exchanges. He stated that he had spent years opposing the APC politically, yet the assistance he received did not reflect hostility or rivalry.
Metuh recounted that Gbajabiamila was not only sent to observe his situation but also to convey messages of reassurance on behalf of Tinubu. He said that this support helped him navigate the difficulties of that period and demonstrated that political disagreements did not necessarily eliminate personal empathy.
He added that the gestures extended to him at the time included both moral encouragement and personal comfort, elements he believed were noteworthy given the political environment. Metuh reiterated that these actions occurred when he was still confronting issues that had drawn national attention.
According to him, this episode reinforced his belief that help sometimes comes from unexpected sources. He stated that the support he received from his former political opponent contributed to his reassessment of where he felt valued, a point he emphasized while discussing his decision to join the APC.
He said, “In the middle of my problem he (Tinubu ) sent the speaker of the House of Representatives then, Femi Gbajabiamila to come and see me.
He reached out to me; he comforted me and he did a lot of things for me then and this was someone who was my political enemy.”
Metuh concluded that although he had spent many years serving within the PDP, the experience taught him that political alignment can shift when circumstances change. He noted that the support he received during his ordeal played a role in shaping the direction of his future political engagement. View, More,
