Kenneth Okonkwo has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the rising insecurity in Nigeria, saying the situation has gotten worse under his watch. He argued that since the President has already spent almost three years in office, it is clear he came in without a real plan to tackle the country’s security problems.

According to a report by Sun Nigeria on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Okonkwo pointed to the recent wave of attacks across several states, from the killing of a Brigadier General and his team in Borno, to the kidnapping of students, worshippers, farmers, and villagers in Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, Sokoto, and Niger States. According to him, Nigeria has never experienced insecurity on this scale.

He also mentioned a warning reportedly issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he would send American troops to protect Nigerians if the killings continued. Okonkwo claimed that this threat shook President Tinubu so deeply that he cancelled international trips for the first time, something he had never done even after previous major attacks.

Okonkwo criticised the government’s approach of “speaking nicely” to terrorists to secure the release of kidnapped victims, saying it only encourages more attacks. He condemned the decision to withdraw security details from VIPs instead of strengthening the country’s security agencies.

According to him, the real solution is to create state police forces. He believes this would increase the number of trained officers across the country and help them respond faster because they understand their local environments.

Okonkwo argued that unless the government amends the constitution to allow state police, insecurity will continue to worsen despite political promises.

In his words, “The threat shook Tinubu to his bones and for the first time, he pretended to show empathy.” View, More,
