In a recent interview on Symfoni TV from 0:20, on Sunday, November 30, 2025, human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara addressed controversial comments made by Orji Kalu regarding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s trial. Opara criticized Kalu’s remarks, arguing that they misrepresented the legal process and undermined the principles of justice.

He said, “Assuming Nnamdi Kanu is at fault, are you supposed to say such a thing?,” stressing that public figures should refrain from making prejudicial statements about ongoing trials. According to Opara, comments like these distort public perception and place undue pressure on the judiciary.

Opara emphasized that every accused person is entitled to a fair trial under the law, regardless of public opinion or political influence. He argued that prejudgment by politicians or media personalities threatens the integrity of the legal system and the rights of defendants to be judged solely on evidence presented in court.

The human rights lawyer also highlighted that Kanu’s trial was marked by procedural irregularities and challenges, including the foreclosure of his defense and denial of final written submissions. Opara stressed that these issues make it even more important to maintain a neutral and evidence-based perspective when discussing the case publicly.

Despite Kanu’s conviction and imprisonment, Opara reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing all available legal remedies while upholding the principles of justice. He concluded that public commentary should never override the rights of a defendant, and that safeguarding the integrity of the judicial process is essential for maintaining public trust in the rule of law.
