The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, has called for a detailed clarification on the category of individuals who would be affected by the recent presidential directive that ordered the withdrawal of police orderlies from Very Important Persons.
In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Ihonvbere explained that, although he did not consider himself a VIP, his position as a national officer of Nigeria makes it necessary for him to have police protection.
He stressed that it is important to clearly define who would fall under the scope of this policy, pointing out that, in countries around the world, it is standard for presidents and other key government functionaries to be provided with police protection to ensure their security.
The Professor of Political Science also expressed deep concern over the exploitation of police orderlies, particularly by those wielding financial power.
He said, “Not long ago, a private citizen visited me. He came from the United States to do business in Nigeria.
“He had six police guards with him. This is something we need to look at.”
In a separate interview, Edo lawmaker Billy Osawaru stated that he was now on his own, without providing further details on his plans going forward.
When asked whether his police guard had been withdrawn, he confirmed that it had and reiterated that he was now on his own. View, More,
