The Commissioner for Information in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua, has revealed how a military commander planning an operation against bandits received a suspicious phone call from someone believed to be a government representative, asking about the route the troops intended to take.

Speaking during an interview with TVC from 8:37, Afegbua recounted the incident from approximately three years ago. “There was an incident sometime about three years ago where the army were preparing to go for an onslaught against bandits. And some of the soldiers—their commander was briefing them—and before you know it, the commander phone was ringing. And when the commander picked up the call, the caller, on the other side, was asking, ‘What route do you want to take? What route?’ And he didn’t reply. So they wanted to know how to ambush them,” he said.

The commissioner called for a stronger action against those supporting the bandits’ operations from the inside. He argued that the government must identify not only the bandits themselves but also their recruiters and financiers who treat banditry as a business venture.

Afegbua cited Katsina State as an example of the impunity bandits enjoy, describing how armed criminals openly attend wedding ceremonies without facing any security response. “In Katsina, for example, they tell you bandits are coming to attend wedding ceremonies. They are carrying guns. They are carrying other weapons. And they are gladly saying they want to operate for three hours before they escape to their forests. They will do it, and one of them will get married, and they will leave.” View, More,
