Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has claimed that Nnamdi Kanu once plotted to eliminate the former Rivers State governor.
Olayinka revealed that the minister, was allegedly targeted after refusing to enforce directives issued by the IPOB leader.
Olayinka shared the allegation through a post on his X handle, where he referenced two old news reports. One was a 2021 Punch article highlighting Wike’s hard stance against attempts by IPOB members to impose their rules in Rivers State.
The other was a Guardian report from May 2025 detailing court-admitted audio recordings in which Kanu was said to have issued orders against Wike. Olayinka argued that these reports support his claim about past threats.
He further alleged that Kanu, who is serving a life sentence on terrorism charges, once placed a ₦100 million bounty on Wike.
According to him, this happened during Wike’s tenure as governor when he rejected the “Sit-at-Home” directive that IPOB tried to impose.
Olayinka insisted that the threat was real and dangerous, noting that offering money for the killing of a sitting governor was an extreme act that should not be minimized.
In the same post, he criticized former Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for defending Kanu after his sentencing. Olayinka questioned whether Obi would have spoken in the same manner if he had been the one targeted.
He argued that defending someone accused of issuing such threats raises concerns, especially when the alleged actions were directed at another public official.
Olayinka’s remarks have drawn reactions online, as many continue to debate both the claim and its implications for past and present political tensions.
According to Lere Olayinka on his official X handle:
“Because Wike didn’t allow his SIT AT HOME in Rivers State then, Nnamdi Kanu placed N100m bounty on him (Wike). Imagine announcing that anyone who k!lled a Governor will collect N100m.” View, More,
