During a recent interview from 9:40, legal expert Fred Nzeako raised serious concerns about the conduct of the court in the case involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He argued that the judge went beyond his lawful authority when making certain remarks about how Kanu should be detained.

Fred Nzeako noted that many Nigerians remain puzzled by some decisions taken throughout the trial. He acknowledged that people are still unsure why Nnamdi Kanu chose to dismiss his previous legal team and represent himself. However, he emphasized that those issues are no longer the major focus. What truly concerns the public, he said, is the manner in which the conviction and sentencing were handled.

According to him, there are widespread doubts regarding whether due process was actually followed. He questioned whether decisions were based strictly on the law or whether personal views and external influences played a role in the outcome. “The whole issue surrounding the trial, the whole issue surrounding the conviction and sentencing, the attitude of the court itself, whether the court followed the law or whether the court followed personal opinion of the jurist, or whether the court in some people’s opinion acted on a script to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu is taken off the street,” Fred Nzeako remarked. He pointed out that not only Nigerians but also members of the international community are skeptical that justice was truly served in this case.

He stated that throughout the proceedings, Kanu repeatedly demanded to know the legal basis for the charges against him. “Nnamdi Kanu himself had continued to say it in court, that they should show him the law with which he’s being tried,” Fred Nzeako recalled, stressing that it is confusing to many that a defendant could be tried for a crime “not known to law in a criminal trial.”

Fred Nzeako strongest criticism was directed at the judge’s comments on how Kanu should be held in custody. According to him, this amounted to judicial interference with duties that do not belong to the court. “The judge jumped into the arena, for the judge to say he has to be kept in a certain form of arena, he’s overreaching his office. It’s not the duty of the judge to say where he should be kept,” he declared. View, More,
