During a recent live session on his YouTube channel from 52.04, Dele Farotimi spoke about the growing insecurity across Nigeria and shared a disturbing story that highlights how bold and violent some of the armed groups operating in the country have become.
He explained that a well-known bandit leader called Jankare had been involved in the killing of a police officer, ACP Aminu Dahir. According to what he described, the officer was allegedly betrayed by some people within the security system, which made the attack possible. After killing him, the bandits went on to strip his body and take his police uniform.
Farotimi recounted how shocking it was that Jankare later wore that same uniform to attend meetings that were supposed to promote peace between the government and the armed groups. The uniform still carried the officer’s name, making the situation even more troubling.
He added that during these peace meetings, the militants insisted on setting the rules. One of their conditions was that no policeman should be seen anywhere near the meeting area. If any officer needed to be present for official reasons, they were not allowed to wear their uniform. The fact that individuals referred to as bandits were the ones giving these instructions showed how much control they believed they had.
Farotimi used this story to show the seriousness of Nigeria’s security challenges.
In his words, “The militants had told the Government, no policemen must be seen and if they must attend, they must not come in their uniform. Bandits, quotes and unquote, issuing conditions for peace to the Nigerian state.” View, More,
