According to a report by Vanguard, on Sunday November 23, 2025, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has stated that Nigeria cannot achieve true unity as long as ethnic discrimination continues across the country.
He made this point while speaking at an event in Akure, where he warned that the nation is becoming more divided because of unequal treatment among its many ethnic groups.
Sowore explained that unity will remain impossible if one tribe sees itself as superior to others.
He said this attitude creates suspicion, fear, and bitterness among citizens.
According to him, no country can move forward when people are treated differently simply because of where they come from.
He gave examples of how discrimination affects daily life, he said some Nigerians invest in businesses outside their home states, only for those businesses to be destroyed because the government does not like their ethnic background.
Sowore described this as unfair and harmful to national development.
He stressed that a country cannot claim to be united when citizens live in fear of losing their livelihoods due to prejudice.
Sowore raised concerns about unequal treatment by security agencies.
He said Nigeria cannot be united when some terrorists receive better treatment than people who fight for justice or express dissent.
According to him, this imbalance sends a dangerous message that violence is tolerated but peaceful agitation is punished.
He argued that this discourages citizens who believe in democratic rights and peaceful activism.
“We cannot have unity in a country where somebody who has done business in a place has his business demolished because the government doesn’t like his ethnicity.
We cannot have unity in this country where some terrorists are treated better than freedom fighters,” he said. View, More,
